Introduction to Better Writing

Writers want to share real stories that matter. They want their message to reach people and stay with them. But strong writing takes more than good ideas. It needs practice, structure, and an original voice. Can this be taught? Yes!

Structure and the Beat Sheet

Many writers struggle with structure. They worry that it will turn their work into a formula. They don’t want to write a “typical Hollywood movie.” But in fact, the opposite is true. If you map out your story before you begin to write, you will have a much better chance of writing a unique, original story that resonates with your readers and viewers.

I help writers map out their story on a Beat Sheet, boiling it down to one page that tells the whole story. They can then start the writing process with a road map that keeps them on the right track.

It’s So Simple

You can learn story structure in one session with me. It’s not complicated. By using the beat sheet, you will see what the story needs. Does it have too many characters? Does it need another character? Where should you start?

One of the most powerful tools I offer is the beat sheet workshop. Writers often think structure kills creativity. But the beat sheet does the opposite. It provides a framework that supports the story while keeping it flexible enough for your voice.

Even experienced writers are surprised by how much the beat sheet helps, be it a screenplay, novel, or memoir. Even a non-fiction essay will engage the reader if it begins with an anecdote, a little story that illustrates the point you’re trying to make. Whatever medium you choose, whatever genre, structure remains the same. Story is Story is Story.
