Click Around

Three years ago, I hired a website designer because I’m not tech savvy and I couldn’t possibly do it myself. Paula was brilliant. She set up this blog. The newsletter. My store. I wondered how she learned all this stuff. After all, she had an arts background just like I did. Did she go to a special tech school?

As we worked together, she started to show me how to make adjustments on my own. I resisted.

“Can’t I just call you when I need something changed?”

“Sure. But it’ll cost you.”

“How did you learn all this?”

Paula paused. Maybe I shouldn’t have asked. Maybe this was a trade secret. Maybe she didn’t want to share this proprietary knowledge. “How did I learn it?”

“I’m just curious,” I said.

“Um, by clicking around?”

There was no trade secret. There was no special school or a mysterious mentor who could show you how to build a website. The information is readily available on the internet, for anyone to find. All you need to have is a willingness to learn something new. Now, when I need to make an adjustment on my website, I can click around and figure it out for myself.

Soon I will launch my new book. How will I know how to market the book? Appear on podcasts? Get the word out?

Simple. I’ll just click around.
